HBO brings video game Last of Us to TV

US premium cablenet HBO has greenlit a drama series based on video game The Last of Us, with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin attached to write.

Francesca Orsi

The series will be a Sony Pictures Television coproduction with fellow US firms Word Games, Naughty Dog and PlayStation Productions also attached.

Mazin and Neil Druckmann will write and executive produce. Francesca Orsi, executive VP of HBO programming, made the announcement over the weekend.

Based on the critically acclaimed video game The Last of Us, developed by games producer Naughty Dog exclusively for the Sony PlayStation platforms, the story takes place 20 years after modern civilisation has been destroyed.

Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the US and depend on each other for survival.
