Hawes investigates honour killing for ITV

UK broadcaster ITV has commissioned a two-part drama starring Keeley Hawes based on the 2006 real-life murder and ‘honour killing’ of Banaz Mahmod in London.

Mahmod was an Iraqi Kurdish Muslim woman who lived in London with her family. At the age of 20, she was murdered by her family after falling in love with a man who was not of her parents’ choosing.

Hawes (Bodyguard, The Durrells) will star as Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Goode in Honour, a 2×60′ series following Goode’s search to discover what happened to Mahmod after she went missing.

Honour is written by Gwyneth Hughes (Vanity Fair, Dark Angel, Remember Me), directed by Richard Laxton (Mrs Wilson, Burton & Taylor, An Englishman in New York) and produced by Alliea Nazar. ITV Studios Global Entertainment handles international distribution.

Hughes is also exec producing, alongside Hawes, Peter Kosminsky and former Channel 4 drama chief Liza Marshall (Riviera). The series is produced by Marshall’s production company Hera Pictures in association with Hawes’ recently launched company Buddy Club. Filming will commence in September.

“In a time where honour killings are still rife, it is critical to shine a light on such an important subject. Banaz Mahmod’s story, and DCI Goode’s subsequent investigation, is certainly one that needs to be told,” said Hawes.
