Harwood quits BBC for Fremantle

The BBC’s head of drama production Kate Harwood is leaving the organisation after 24 years to head up a revived drama label at FremantleMedia.

Harwood, who currently oversees drama production for the BBC in England, will head up Euston Films as MD, reporting into Sara Geater, CEO of FremantleMedia UK (FMUK).

Euston Films, which previously produced shows including classic police series The Sweeney as part of Thames Television, will sit alongside Fremantle’s Newman Street as the firm seeks to increase UK drama output. The revived brand will also join FMUK’s other production labels that include Boundless, Retort and Talkback and Thames.

Geater said the relaunch of Euston Films was part of FMUK’s strategy to produce “high-end drama with global reach.”

Harwood added that she was “relishing the challenge of new ventures in drama in the independent sector” following her stint at the UK pubcaster. She began her career as a script editor at the BBC’s in house drama unit and went on to work on shows including Holding On, Charles II and Twenty Thousand Streets.

She has been head of drama production in England since the end of 2012, when the BBC merged continuing drama series and daytime shows.
