Greenbird ready to take off

Former Shine and Argonon execs have set up a UK company aimed at developing the commercial side of production companies, leaving them free to concentrate on the creative side.

Shine TV’s Jamie Munro and Stuart Mullin, from Argonon, have founded Greenbird, which has access to investment finance to accelerate the growth plans of newly formed small indies.

Greenbird will specialise in entertainment and factual producers, offering advice on commercial exploitation of intellectual property and licensing deals, as well as operational support and back-office administration systems.

It has already taken a minority stake in newly created Tuesday’s Child, which will specialise in entertainment and factual entertainment formats. The company was launched by Karen Smith, former MD of Shine TV and executive producer of Strictly Come Dancing (Dancing With the Stars).

BBC Worldwide has secured a deal giving it a first look at projects from the fledgling prodcos backed by Greenbird.

Munro left Shine TV earlier this year after three-and-a-half years as joint MD. Previously he was the commercial director at Tiger Aspect and held various roles at the BBC across 12 years with the corporation.

Mullin recently left Argonon, where he was chief financial officer for two years. He also spent five years with the BBC before leading the sale of Wall to Wall to Shed Media.

Munro, Greenbird’s joint MD, said: “We want to be able to give production companies the freedom to do what they do best. Smaller independents don’t necessarily have the business experience, knowledge, contacts or even time to make the most of their shows commercially.

“We want to be able to offer this support from the bottom up, from building an the initial business plan to helping production companies realise the true value of their ideas and their businesses.”
