Greece’s Antenna makes Vice link

Greece-based TV broadcaster Antenna Group is partnering up with Vice Media in a deal that will see the maverick multimedia firm expand its reach across south east Europe.

Vice, part-owned by Rupert Murdoch, will use the partnership to develop and produce new content covering news, fashion, sports and cultural topics aimed at 18-32 year-olds.

A new office has been opened in Athens, while new online channels will be launched in the region with content available locally via mobile devices and across the firm’s international channels.

Original programming is also due to be launched online over the next few months with a selection of shows from the venture set to be aired on as-yet unnamed TV networks.

The deal comes shortly after the appointment of former NBCUniversal International president and Cineflix Studios MD Pete Smith, who joined the firm as MD earlier in January.

Antenna has also been expanding its operations in south-east Europe, having inked deals involving PRVA Televizija in Serbia, PRVA Montenegro and Planet TV in Slovenia. It also picked up Kiss TV, Kiss FM, Magic FM, One FM and Rock FM from ProSieben last month, marking its first move into Romania.

Vice currently operates in 35 countries and is set to launch its Vice News channel online over the coming months.

The firm’s CEO Shane Smith said that the joint venture deal could be expanded to other regions if it proved successful, with similar partnerships being considered in South America, South East Asia and Africa.
