Discovery Communications has moved quickly to appoint an industry veteran to oversee its global production efforts, following Eileen O’Neill’s decision to turn down the role.

Marc Graboff has been named president of global business and legal affairs, production management and studios for the company.

The move comes after his departure from Core Media, where he had been president and CEO since January 2012 until its mega-merger with Shine and Endemol at the turn of the year. Prior to that he was president of west coast business operations at NBC Universal Television Entertainment.

Based in LA, Graboff will oversee Discovery’s overall business affairs, production management strategy and matters relating to acquisition, development and production of programming.

That includes managing Discovery’s in-house production studios, UK prodcos Betty and Raw, and production and distribution giant All3Media, which Discovery bought into last year as a joint venture with Liberty Global.

Discovery veteran O’Neill was named global group president of Discovery Studios in August last year. However, she announced at the end of last month that she had decided to leave the company instead after 25 years.

Lee Bartlett, previously executive VP of global production management, business and legal affairs, has been promoted to president of the studios group, reporting to Graboff who will now take on production responsibilities as well as wider commitments.

Thirty-year media and entertainment veteran Graboff will join in April and report to Bruce Campbell, chief development and digital media officer and general counsel.

Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav said he hoped the appointments would help grow the firm’s market share by “accelerating our current production engines, acquiring more IP across new genres and formats and bringing more of the world’s top production partners to Discovery.”
