Gaumont, Lucía Puenzo sign drama deal

France- and LA-based prodco Gaumont has agreed a multi-project drama series development deal with Argentinian writer and director Lucía Puenzo.

Included in the deal is a near-future, dystopian thriller series called Futuro Desierto centred on a robotics engineer who moves his family to a remote town in Patagonia where he is tasked with secretly testing the first humanoid robots.

Puenzo (The German Doctor) will be co-showrunner with her brother Nicolás Puenzo, with both to direct multiple episodes throughout the series.

Also in the deal is This is Not a Love Song, which tells the life story of eccentric Italian feminist photographer, model, actress and political activist Tina Modotti.

Puenzo will serve as showrunner and director of the series, with Argentinian producer and actor Lucas Akoskin (On the Milky Road) and Leonor Varela attached to exec produce. Chilean actress Varela (Blade II) will play the lead role.
