FX, Sky line up Martin Freeman dramedy

Martin Freeman in FX’s Fargo

MIPCOM: US cablenet FX and European satcaster Sky have ordered a new comedy-drama starring Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Fargo) from UK-based Avalon.

Breeders will take a contemporary look at parenthood, exploring the paradox of loving your child unconditionally but also regarding them as the most infuriating part of your life.

The series is a coproduction from Catastrophe producer Avalon, Sky Original Productions and FX Productions.

Simon Blackwell (Veep, Peep Show) is showrunner on the series, which also stars Daisy Haggard (Episodes, Black Mirror). It is executive produced by Freeman, Blackwell, the Thick of It’s Chris Addison, Richard Allen-Turner, Rob Aslett, David Martin, Jon Thoday and Michael Wiggs.

Breeders was commissioned for Sky by Zai Bennett, director of programmes, and Jon Mountague, head of comedy, with Josh Cole set to be the commissioning editor. The 10-episode first season will air on FX in 2020.

“Martin Freeman is an incredibly versatile artist who is perfectly paired with the wonderfully talented Daisy Haggard in Breeders,” said Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions.

“We enjoyed working with Martin on the first instalment of Fargo and are delighted that he is executive producing along with Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison.”
