Freeform Fosters series finale

Disney’s US cablenet Freeform has ordered a three-part series finale for its adoption drama The Fosters, and is also planning a spin-off show from the series.

The special three-night limited series will air in the summer and will lead into a new as-yet untitled 13-episode series.

The spin-off will follow characters Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) as they embark on the next phase of their young adult lives.

The Fosters is executive produced by singer and actress Jennifer Lopez and created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige (Queer As Folk), who also serve as executive producers and writers alongside Joanna Johnson.

The show is a one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family mix of adopted and biological teenaged kids being raised by two mothers. It is produced by Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions in association with Freeform, and also has Greg Gugliotta, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina attached as executive producers.

The producing team of the original show will helm The Fosters limited series finale as well as the new spin-off series.

The Fosters returns for its 10-part fifth season on January 9 at 20.00 EST, including a milestone 100th episode.
