France TV signs Universal pact

French broadcaster TF1 has lost its series output deal with Universal Television after the US major signed up with pubcaster France Télévisions instead.

France Télévisions gets a first look at all series produced by Universal, starting with shows including Heart Matters, Shades of Blue, Unveiled and Warrior. TF1 keeps the rights to the series it previously acquired, including House.

The news was revealed this morning by BFM Business.

US series have a weekly strand on France Télévisions’ mainstream channel France 2 and several on DTT young-adult network France 4.

France Télévisions had no output deals with any US major after it lost its contract with Warner Bros nine years ago when the latter signed up with TF1.

TF1 still has deals in place with Warner Bros and Sony, while rival M6 has linked up with 20th Century Fox, Disney and CBS.
