France Televisions supports indie film

French public broadcast group France Télévisions has increased its commitment to the production and TV transmission of local indie films by signing a charter with the local association for writers, directors and producers (ARP) and the liaison bureau for film organisations (BLOC).

The deal sees France Televisions raise its level of investment in film above the amount stipulated by the government. The group intends to create a fund to support independent theatrical distributors.

The agreement also guarantees the transmission for no less than 360 films a year on France2 and France3. Both channels will also raise the profile of national film by tabling a new film magazine show into their schedules.

{This charter sets down the group's initiatives in support of a strong, diverse and independent cinema and strengthens the partnership between France Televisions and the film industry,{ said spokesman.

The ARP welcomed the move, describing the charter as a shot in the arm for cultural diversity. It also believed the agreement would help to broaden the selection of films on offer at cinemas.
