Fox renews Girl, Exorcist, Brooklyn

UPFRONTS: Fox in the US has commissioned the seventh and final season of sitcom New Girl, while also handing renewals to The Exorcist and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

The New Girl

New Girl has been commissioned for its seventh season

Single-camera comedy New Girl, distributed by 20th Century Fox TV, was created by Elizabeth Meriwether and sees Zooey Deschanel play a quirky 30-something teacher living with three men in LA.

Fox has also ordered a second season of one-hour drama The Exorcist, which comes from 20th Century Fox Television and is based on the 1974 horror movie of the same name.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn Nine-Nine will return for a fifth season on the network. The Universal Television workplace ensemble comedy follows a talented-but-carefree police detective, a by-the-book captain and their diverse group of colleagues.

New commissions from Fox for the 2017/18 season include the live musical productions A Christmas Story (3×60′) and Rent.

The latter was originally produced in New York by New York Theatre Workshop and on Broadway by Jeffrey Seller, Kevin McCollum, Allan S Gordon and New York Theatre Workshop.

A Christmas Story, meanwhile, will be produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television with theatre producer Marc Platt, who will also produce Rent for the network.

It comes after Fox last week cancelled three of its shows after their first seasons, including live-action/animation hybrid Son of Zorn.
