Food Network UK orders first course

Food Network UK, whose US parent is set to acquire a 50% stake in broadcaster UKTV, has commissioned its first original series.

The culinary channel has commissioned UK indie Sweet TV to make a 10×30′ series giving traditional British food a ‘street’ twist.

Andy Bates’ Street Feasts will be presented by the chef and market trader, aka Pie Man, who is known for his hearty British food sold from a stall in London’s Brick Lane.

The series will air on September 26 and was commissioned by Food Network UK’s head of commissioning and original content Sue Walton, the former ITV Studios head of daytime who took up her new post in June. Sweet TV’s David Nottage is exec-producing.

Food Network UK’s majority shareholder, Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI), is poised to buy Virgin Media’s 50% stake in UKTV.

The multimillion-dollar deal – which has yet to be confirmed – would see SNI acquire Virgin’s stake in a business that counts diginets Good Food, Dave and Really in its portfolio. SNI is rolling out US-originated Food Network across Europe through a joint venture with Chello Zone.
