FNG, Canal+ declare War of the Worlds copro

Canal+ in France and Fox Networks Group (FNG) Europe and Africa have teamed up for a new coproduction of HG Wells’ classic sci-fi novel The War of the Worlds.

Howard Overman

Produced by UK indie Urban Myth Films in association with StudioCanal, the series is a contemporary re-imagining of the story. Set in present-day Europe, War of the Worlds follows the aftermath of an alien attack which wipes out nearly all human life.

The 8×60’ series has been adapted for TV by Howard Overman (Misfits, Crazyhead), company director at Urban Myth. Overman will exec produce the series alongside fellow Urban Myth directors Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps.

The series is a Canal+ original creation and the second original regional scripted commission for FNG Europe and Africa. FNG will handle European and African distribution (excluding French-speaking territories), while StudioCanal will be in charge of international sales.

“In many ways HG Wells’ novel is a cautionary tale of racial superiority and ethnic conflict,” said Overman. “It is these themes that I wanted to explore more fully in my modern re-imagining.”
