FIC buys Spanish doc channel

Fox International Channels (FIC) has acquired a Spanish pay-TV documentary channel, adding to the eight networks it already has in that market.

Formerly owned by Prisa TV (fka Sogecable), Viajar launched in 1997 and has SD and HD feeds. It documents different cultures and also carries local productions about gastronomy, art, culture and adventure.

Under its new owner Viajar will retain its positioning, style, formats and programming, said FIC, and will continue to broadcast documentaries and series focused on the exploration of the world. It is aimed at an adult audience aged between 35 and 54.

Titles aired by the net include Brian Sewell’s Grand Tour (TVF International), Nepal – Journeys On The Roof Of The World (Electric Sky) as well as Pilot Productions series Metropolis, Pilot Globe Guides and Globe Trekker.

Viajar is carried by the Prisa-backed Canal+ satellite TV platform, previously known as Digital+. A FIC representative declined to comment on the value of the takeover deal or whether there would be any management changes.

The two Viajar channels add to FIC’s existing bouquet of channels in Spain. They are: entertainment nets Fox, Fox HD and Fox Crime; and documentary channels National Geographic, National Geographic HD, Nat Geo Wild and Nat Geo Wild HD. FIC also operates children’s channel Baby TV in Spain. No financial details of the Viajar deal were given.
