Fear the Walking Dead breaks records

AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead broke US television records last night, delivering the highest number of viewers for a series premiere in cable TV history.

Fear the Walking Dead is billed as a 'companion' to The Walking Dead

Fear the Walking Dead is described as a ‘companion’ to The Walking Dead

The drama, billed as a companion series to the network’s popular zombie thriller The Walking Dead, was watched by a total of 10.1 million viewers.

It means AMC is now home to three of the top five cable series premieres of all time in the coveted 18-49 demographic, following the success of Better Call Saul earlier this year and The Walking Dead in 2010.

The first season of Fear the Walking Dead will run for six episodes and will return for a second season of 15 episodes next year.

The first 90-minute episode premiered simultaneously on AMC Global in more than 125 countries.

The UK feed of AMC Global is due to air from August 28, carried by BT’s subscription IPTV service BT TV.

The first episode of Fear the Walking Dead will be made available for free to all audiences on the BT Showcase Channel and will premiere on AMC in the UK on August 31.

The channel will also feature programming from Icon Film Distribution, Lionsgate, Miramax, Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Television, AMC revealed today.

Bruce Tuchman, president of AMC Global and Sundance Channel Global, said: “Combined with the first window UK premieres of Fear the Walking Dead and Rectify, AMC will offer an unparalleled selection of programming that will appeal to a wide range of adult audiences.”

Alongside movies and series such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad, AMC will also showcase the first-window premieres of Cleaners, from Sony, and two seasons of Manhattan, from Lionsgate.
