All3Media International present the world premiere of Black Snow, starring Travis Fimmel, with a Q&A featuring cast and crew

Starring Travis Fimmel (Vikings), this elevated investigative thriller begins with the opening of a time capsule at a high school reunion. It unearths a secret that could hold the clues to solving the shocking murder 25 years earlier of teenager Isabel Baker, which rocked her Australian South Sea Islander community. HOT PROPERTIES: Africa

Shadowland, Catch me a Killer and Spinners
This Hot Properties session shines a light on three upcoming African dramas expected to have an impact on the international market over the next 18 months. We hear how the projects were created, developed, packaged and sold from those closest to the project. This session features: Shadowland, Catch me a Killer and Spinners.

    Shadowland
Shadowland is a female-driven wildlife crime thriller series set in South Africa from creator and writer Jacqui Barcos, writing team Rohan Dickson (Reyka, Desert Rose) and Yule Caise (Heroes, Tales), director Darnell Martin (American Rust, The Good Lord Bird, Cadillac Records) and executive producer Peter Elkoff (Sons of Anarchy, Chance, The Resident). Athena Pictures’ Andra Gordon and Sarena Khan and Starlings Television’s Chris Philip and Karine Martin are executive producing with Propagate Content’s Ben Silverman. A fierce and reclusive female wildlife activist reluctantly teams up with an undercover special ops veteran to expose a plot to ambush a rhino translocation caravan. Ultimately the unlikely duo is forced to confront their deepest fears in the face of an ever-expanding web of corruption. Based on real people and events, Shadowland is in the end a bittersweet love story that delves into the unspoken truths behind Africa’s dire poaching crisis.
Speakers: Jacqui Barcos, Rohan Dickson and Yule Caise.

    Catch me a killer
Catch me a Killer is a crime series set in South Africa in the 1990’s and tells the harrowing true story of psychologist Micki Pistorius – South Africa’s first serial killer profiler. Charlotte Hope ( The Spanish Princess ) stars as Micki Pistorius. In 1994, against the backdrop of a country on the brink of democracy, Micki joins a task team on the hunt for a notorious serial killer and is launched into a dangerous underworld. Micki is assigned with profiling the Station Strangler – a serial murderer who has left a trail of twenty-two dead boys in his wake in the dunes of the windswept and isolated Cape Flats. This is the first case of Micki’s career in the South African Police, and the first in an array of warped criminal minds into which Micki must dive head-first.
Set in a uniquely South African landscape, Catch me a Killer is a brooding dramatic thriller led by a flawed, determined protagonist.
( Episode by episode, we’ll watch Micki deal with the looming spectre of her personal life and confront increasing darkness in her quest to entrap and understand some of South African’s most infamous serial killers – a process during which she will both find, and lose, herself.)
Speakers: Amy Jephta, Simon Howley, Jess Ruston.

    Spinners
Ethan is a 17-year-old driver working for a local gang, run with an iron fist by Damien. Trying to support his younger brother but increasingly disgusted with this life and constantly on the edge, Ethan discovers a possible way out via spinning, an intense local sport where he could put his driving skills to use and find a new family. But the looming gang war jeopardises that hope.
Speakers: Cécile Gérardin, Benjamin Hoffman and Joachim Landau.

    ENDS 16:00

    DRAMA SERIES SCRIPT COMPETITION

The Studio21 Drama Series Script Competition, coproduced with Content London, Script Angel and WritersRoom, is designed to find the next big thing in scripted entertainment.

We’re looking for an outstanding pilot for a one-hour drama from a fresh writer who has got what it takes to create a primetime series.

These six finalists have been chosen from more than 250 entries. The winner will be announced at The International Drama Awards on Thursday December 1 from 6pm.

The winner will be optioned and developed by Studio21.

    1. Clitorati, Jess Edwards

A coming-of-age story collides with a high-melodrama murder mystery, in the audacious world of Queer East London. Iconic, glamorous, empowered: queer women are never represented the way they should be. Go to any Queer clubnight – Pxssy Palace, Big Dyke Energy, Gal Pals – and you’ll see, these are some of the most extraordinary, bold, and creative people around. And yet onscreen, fabulous gay identity is a solely male domain. The Gaytriarchy’s out in full force. Queer women are boring or serious or angst ridden or yearning or lonely. Glamour? No gay girls allowed. CLITORATI will be the show that changes this. The show that is to queer women today what Queer as Folk was to gay men in the noughties. A riotous, unapologetic, genre-bending dramedy, in which four best mates navigate their wild love lives, square up to their shame, and fight together to take up the space they deserve – all while racing against time to solve a murder. The electric glamour of Pose meets the noir-ish intrigue of Search Party. It’s an explosive celebration of what it means to be Female and Queer.

    2. Death in the Family, Alex Mathias

When five mismatched brothers discover their comatose father is not a handyman but a hitman with a price on his head, they must band together to take over the deadly family business.

    3. I Am Bird Gurl, Laurence Turnbull

Billie, a narcoleptic 13-year-old girl, falls asleep so often she struggles to distinguish reality from dreams. And when she dreams, she dreams she is ‘Bird Gurl’, hovering above her own life on 6 foot eagle wings. So when her Dad goes missing, accused of murder, and her dreams seem to offer clues to the mystery of his disappearance, she resolves to harness the power of Bird Gurl and find him before the cops.

Aimed at a YA audience, I am Bird Gurl is the genesis series to the returner – Bird Gurl; Dream Detective.

    4. Sacrificial Lambs, Salim Allybokus

‘Sacrificial Lambs’ is a 60-minute Horror-Drama series about a quaint English university town and its celebrated university. The more the university maintains its endless production line of success stories, the more the town thrives. But as the superstar graduates scale impossible heights and the town’s disaffected teenage residents continue to disappear, is everything as it seems? Or is there something much darker lurking within this very polite society?…

    5. Shadowlands, Russel McLean

Shadowlands is a supernatural thriller series set in the Scottish Highlands. When a corpse is discovered in a whiskey barrel at a remote Highland distillery, a newly reassigned police sergeant finds herself drawn into what seems an impossible mystery, with roots deep in the past. As strange events start to plague the local community, she finds herself forced to confront the possibility of dangerous supernatural forces at play…

    6. The Truth, Tobias Hussey

A Jehovah’s Witness teenager struggles with his burgeoning sexuality and the overwhelming curiosity to experience a forbidden world, at all costs.

Behind the curtain peek into the mysterious world of Jehovah’s Witnesses through the eyes of Isaac. Bored of the forever-long sermons warning of the dangers of straying from the right path, the teenager dreams of a forbidden life as a ‘90s rock star. On a community round with his father, the much-respected congregation elder, Isaac has to knock on the door of the girl he has a crush on and preach to her about The Impending Armageddon. Embarrassment turns to opportunity when a bible study with benefits ensues, plunging Isaac into a double life of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll, while also facing an imminent baptism and the prospect of excommunication. A chapter no scripture prepared him for.

CASE STUDY: A Spy Among Friends

Golden globe and emmy award winning actor Damian Lewis takes us inside his new series A Spy Among Friends. Based on the New York Times best-selling book written by Ben Macintyre, the six episode series dramatises the true story of Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby, two British spies and lifelong friends. Philby was the most notorious British defector and Soviet double agent in history. This is a story of intimate duplicity; of loyalty, trust and treachery. Philby’s deeply personal betrayal, uncovered at the height of the Cold War, resulted in the gutting of British and American Intelligence. In this exclusive case study we hear from Lewis and the key creative team the story from concept to screen and see some clips from the up coming show.

HOT PROPERTIES: Drama, Ride Out, La Storia, Les Affluents

This Hot Properties session shines a light on three upcoming dramas expected to have an impact on the international market over the next 18 months.  We hear how the projects were created, developed, packaged and sold from those closest to the project.

This session features: Ride Out, La Storia and Les Affluents.

    Ride Out
Ride Out is an epic sports drama and a tragic love story, based on the real events of an amateur underdog challenging an unbeatable champion on the international MOTO GP motorbike racing circuit during its golden years in the 1970s. Supported by his girlfriend Soili, and camping out at each race to cut costs, Jarno Saarinen rides to free himself from a career working in his family’s struggling funeral home. But to succeed he must risk his life every month, in a harsh competition with his fellow riders and brothers in arms on the track.

Speakers: Timo Vierimaa and Jarmo Lampela.

    La Storia
Ida Ramundo is the widowed mother of 15-year old teenager Nino in Rome during WWII. She has a secret: Ida is of Jewish descent. But when she is assaulted by a German army soldier, things turn from bad to worse. In pain, dismay, and ashamed, Ida discovers she is pregnant, and, nine months later, secretly gives birth to another boy, who will be lovingly nicknamed Useppe. The family is further shaken by the events of the war: Nino decides to leave to the front line to fight the Fascists, leaving his mother and little Useppe in an apartment in Rome’s San Lorenzo neighborhood to cope with the Nazi occupation and roundups. In the July 1943 bombing, Ida loses everything and is forced to leave. From then on, every day becomes a struggle for her own survival and that of her child.

Speakers: Francesca Archibugi, Roberto Sessa and Maria Pia Ammirati.

    Les Affluents (Tributaries)
Sarah Deléan, a young and ambitious lawyer, wakes up one morning in a panic. Her discreet neighbour who lived in the apartment above her has been murdered. Sarah decides to conduct her own investigation and uncovers controversial mining activities in British Columbia, in Quebec’s Côte-Nord and in Mexico’s Oaxaca Valley. The young woman then steps into an interconnected world of alliances and betrayals, in which the intimidating force of the powerful is matched only by the hope of resistance. Caught in a dilemma, torn between loyalty to her professional family- which includes her fiancé – and the urgent help needed by a group of citizens, it’s up to Sarah to discover her true nature.

This Hot Properties session shines a light on two upcoming dramas expected to have an impact on the international market over the next 18 months. We hear how the projects were created, developed, packaged and sold from those closest to the project.
This session features: AGHA and Reyka.

    AGHA
Adapted from the book ʻLabyrinth of the Wind’ by Madhav Misra, Agha is the story of Indian expat, Ayan Pathak, who finds himself drawn into a turbulent vortex of espionage and nuclear geopolitics in a volatile Tehran on the brink of revolution. Ayan is recruited into this mission against his will after his brilliant and barely legal manoeuvring around India’s tightly regulated import laws of the time gets him noticed by its intelligence agency, R&AW. We follow Ayan on his journey as he transforms from selfish profiteer, to reluctant protagonist, to plucky hero, and finally, to suave spy. A co-production between India’s International Storytelling Company, BANG BANG, and The Big Bang Theory star, Kunal Nayyar’s Good Karma.
    Speakers: Roopak Saluja, Kunal Nayyar.

    Reyka
Reyka, known in some territories as The Canefield Killings, tells the story of a criminal profiler, Reyka Gama (Kim Engelbrecht), who is struggling to come to terms with her dark past. Having been abducted as a child by farmer Angus Speelman (played by Iain Glen) Reyka uses that experience to understand the minds of serial killers. The series follows her investigation into a string of brutal murders in the sugar cane fields of Kwa-Zulu-Natal, South Africa. 20 years on from her abduction, the manipulative, charming Speelman is now up for parole and Reyka holds the key to whether he will be released or not. But Speelman still exerts a powerful hold on her, and this relationship, together with the one she is struggling to rebuild with her mother Elsa and her daughter Thuli, forms the spine of the story.

    CASE STUDY: Accused (Hall 1)
    ENDS 16:45

    CASE STUDY: Accused

ACCUSED is a new collection of 15 intense, topical stories of crime and punishment. Each episode is a fast-paced provocative thriller, exploring a different crime, in a different city with an entirely original cast. Every story opens in a courtroom on the defendant, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how circumstance led to prosecution.

Make no mistake, this is not a procedural. There are no cops or detectives leading us through an investigation. Because each episode is told from the defendant’s point of view. In most crime shows, the ongoing question is who-done-it. Accused poses two very different questions: Who’s the victim and what’s the crime? The victim could be anyone in the defendant’s life – a friend, a family member, a co-worker, a lover, a stranger.  And the crime is often something we didn’t see coming. It’s never a straight line. Ordinary people are placed in extraordinary situations that push them to cross a line they can never step back from. Expectations are constantly subverted with red-herrings and unexpected twists that will keep our viewers guessing until the end.

In this Content London exclusive case study Howard Gordon and the creative team take us through how the concept for the show came about, how it was creatively realised and show some exclusive clips.
