Shaka
Mandela might be the best known African in the contemporary world but the most enigmatic and mythologized African is Shaka.
Born in 1787 of a forbidden affair between a prince and princess, his tormented early years of exile and persecution, moulded his overpowering and charismatic personality.
Surviving assassination attempts from evil rulers and powerful witches, he took the Zulu throne by killing his brother. From a volunteer army of 200 and a territory, no more than a small local district, Shaka in ten years built a formidable army of 70 000 highly trained men, conquering and uniting the southern Nguni kingdoms. Challenging past practise, he gave the dispossessed a voice against the aristocracy.
In 1828, when Shaka was killed by those closest to him, he had been preparing to resist the inevitable invasion of European settlers. Indeed it was the army created and trained by Shaka that fifty years later at Isandlwana, inflicted one of the most dramatic defeats the British army ever suffered.
Viewed by some as a visionary saviour and by others, a brutal dictator, he was undeniably Africa’s military genius and revered King. In the moment that the world has embraced the mythological Africa of Wakanda, no better time for an epic drama series to tell this riveting true story.
Speakers: Angus Gibson, Teboho Mahlatsi and Yolisa Phahle
Sakho and Mangane
In Dakar, the bustling capital of Senegal, there’s a thin line between ordinary daily life and the supernatural. Where the two worlds intersect, an old, lone wolf by the name of Commander Sakho has been keeping invisible yet deadly enemies at bay for the past 20 years. But now they seem to have caught up to him.
In a case where dark, destructive forces are intent on plunging the world into chaos, Sakho is thrown together with Mangane, a young pup who acts without thinking. Now, the fate of the continent—maybe even all of humanity—is in the hands of this unlikely cop duo.
Speakers: Alexandre Rideau and Jean Luc Herbulot

The mysterious death of a schoolgirl at an elite boarding school sets in motion a thrilling series of events. At St Agnes, a prestigious all-girls boarding school in the Midlands of South Africa, one of its most popular students is found dead at the bottom of the clock tower. Fearful of the scandal it might cause, the school is quick to declare that young Lexi Summerveld drunkenly slipped and fell to her death in a tragic accident. But drama teacher Kate Ballard doesn’t believe it. On the night of her death, an upset Lexi had been trying to contact her about something, and Kate had ignored her. Now wracked with guilt, Kate attempts to piece together the events of that fateful night. The Girl from St Agnes is a sexy, moody drama that deals with universal issues around gender, identity, race and class.
