Epix orders Whitaker’s Harlem doc

Godfather of Harlem is set for a second run this year

US cablenet Epix has greenlit docuseries By Whatever Means Necessary: The Times of Godfather of Harlem, exploring the history of the New York City neighbourhood and its music scene.

The four-part documentary tells the story of Harlem through the 1960s and the evolution of its music scene. It was inspired by the music and subjects featured in Epix’s original drama series Godfather of Harlem.

Combining interviews and archival footage, the doc introduces the artists who used their voices, instruments and lyrics to take a stand against oppression.

The series is produced by Godfather of Harlem star Forest Whitaker’s prodco Significant Productions and New York City-based prodco Decoder Media and is set to premiere on Epix this autumn.

Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi executive produce alongside Kasseem ‘Swizz Beatz’ Dean and Keith McQuirter.

Godfather of Harlem is due to return for a second season later this year.
