Endeavor passes rugby doc around world

The Story of Rugby comes from showrunner Steven O’Meagher

NBC Sports Network in the US, sportscaster ESPN in Latin America and Japanese pubcaster NHK have all picked up a docuseries on the history of rugby union ahead of the sport’s World Cup in Japan next month.

US-based Endeavor Content has been shopping The Story of Rugby, which is produced by Desert Road and Hit+Run and backed by delivery firm DHL, around the world.

CBC Gem in Canada, Movistar+ in Spain, Viaplay in the Nordics, Fox in Australia, RTÉ in Ireland, Supersport in Africa and TVNZ in New Zealand are all also on board the six-part docuseries.

The series showrunner is International Emmy nominee Steven O’Meagher (The Golden Hour). The programme tackles issues including colonialism, class war and sexism while focusing on the social, economic, historical and cultural impact of the sport.

Almost 100 people were interviewed for the show, including rugby greats Martin Johnson, Gareth Edwards, Sean Fitzpatrick, Nick Farr-Jones, Hugo Porta, Jean-Pierre Rives and Morne du Plessis.

The series is executive produced by John Pearson and Fiona Taag of DHL, O’Meagher from Desert Road and Rob Shaftel from Hit + Run.
