What is the biggest issue facing the animation industry?
The animation industry must adapt to new ways of broadcasting content. The growth of non-linear broadcasting is a great opportunity, as it allows new formats and new targets to emerge. Indeed, we are witnessing a comeback of series including a narrative continuity and of the TV special format, and the emergence of new formats such as short-episode series and programmes for adult audiences.

What is your company doing in response to this?
For a few years now, we have been diversifying our catalogue of projects. We always take particular care to produce short films because they give us editorial freedom and allow us to discover young authors. They also give us the opportunity to coproduce with countries around the world, which can be the start of fruitful and solid collaborations. We also have a feature film portfolio, alongside TV specials and series, for preschool to adult audiences.

What impact could the Covid-19 pandemic have on the animation industry long-term?
The animation world has come out of lockdown in better shape than live action, for now. Most techniques are quite suited to working from home. However, there are specific problems to be taken in account in regard to 3D feature films, notably in terms of bandwidth, and stop motion, which has a lot in common with live-action shooting. The situation is, therefore, more nuanced than meets the eye. Animation is a set of techniques; each has its own specificity. The Covid-19 crisis is far from over and we must remain cautious for the future. Generally speaking, in France, we fear a drop in advertising revenues and consequently in television channels’ revenues.

How are SVoD services changing the animation industry?
The rise of animated series for adults on SVoD is very striking. Whereas TV channels did not invest in adult animation because their ageing audiences were not interested in this type of work, the platforms tend to address all ages and go beyond a pure “filling the slot” approach. The result is that they need to reach all family members, at any time of day, including 18- to 35-year-olds who have given up on TV channels because they no longer addressed them as an audience.

Tell us about the project you are pitching at Cartoon Forum.
Patouille (52×5′) is our first preschool series, created by Inès Bernard- Espina, Mélody Boulissière and Clémentine Campos. Endowed with a very strong graphic identity, it is made in traditional paper animation, in oil pastel. Through the character of Patouille, who has the power to transform herself, and her friend Momo, who has a huge knowledge of flowers and plants, the series aims to make toddlers aware of the plants that surround them. We are now in development with France Télévisions on a five-minute TV special. We will be working with Miam! Animation on international sales of the series.
