El Rey taps Telemundo exec Rios

US Hispanic-focused El Rey Network has appointed a former Telemundo executive as its VP of programming and acquisitions.

Mauricio Rios joins having been director of programming and scheduling at Telemundo’s Universo Channel, where he had worked for three years.

Prior to that, Rios was director of joint-venture channel operations at Comcast/NBCUniversal International, where he provided oversight of international JV channels in Latin America, South Korea, Israel and Canada.

He previously spent 11 years at Fox Latin American Channels, where he led the acquisitions and programming strategy for a portfolio of channels, including Canal Fox, FX, Fox Life, National Geographic and Speed Channel.

He replaces Dan Kozlowski who has overseen programming and acquisitions for the network, which was behind shows including dramas Matador and From Dusk Till Dawn.

Daniel Tibbets, president and general manager of El Rey Network, said Rios’ “expertise and vision in programming for young, diverse viewers will further propel El Rey’s commitment to be a voice in the industry for US Hispanic audiences.”

Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) launched El Rey Network at the end of 2013.
