Dynamic, Mirkin prep YouTube sci-fi

US prodco and financer Dynamic Television is joining forces with former The Simpsons showrunner David Mirkin on a new live-action sci-fi series for YouTube Premium.

Currently in development, Jeff of the Universe is a one-hour dramedy which Mirkin will write, direct and exec produce.

Although details of the show are being closely guarded, Mirkin jokily said the show would “reveal for the very first time, many, absolutely 100% guaranteed accurate, previously unknown secrets of the universe and the very meaning of existence itself, all of which Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking were both too stupid to figure out.”

Dynamic’s MD Daniel March and senior VP of content Holly Hines will exec produce alongside Mirkin, as will Wynonna Earp exec producer Todd Berger and Emiliano Calemzuk. Dynamic will serve as the studio on the project.

Besides serving as showrunner on multi-season Fox favourite The Simpsons, Mirkin co-created and was showrunner on sitcom Get a Life and directed feature films such as Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion and Heartbreakers.

“Many have desperately tried to keep the stunning, disturbing, life-changing secrets exposed in Jeff of the Universe from ever becoming public, which is why I am so thrilled to be working with the brave folks at YouTube Premium and Dynamic Television,” he said. “In addition, they are giving us a totally unlimited budget. At least that is what I am assuming.”

YouTube has been reining in its exploits in the subscription space over recent months and refocusing on ad-supported video, head of original content Susanne Daniels recently told C21.

Her comments came after it emerged late last year that the Google-owned company was changing its strategy around subscription content, although YouTube Original’s head of drama Jon Wax said scripted series would still feature.

Recent releases have included Left Bank Pictures’ show Origin, about a group of strangers who wake up on a spaceship.
