DR’s Troldspejlet ages up, swaps nets

Long-running Danish children’s show Troldspejlet (The Magic Mirror) is moving networks and will start to target adults as well as kids.

The show, which has been on air since 1989 and focuses on gaming, movies and comics, will shift from DR1 to DR2 later this year, with its target group broadening out to include adults.

The series is fronted by Jakob Stegelmann, who also serves as a programme buyer at Danish public broadcaster DR, and will change its name to Troldspejlet & Co.

The changes to the show, a combination of magazine programme and talkshow, come as a result of “geek culture” becoming part of the mainstream, Stegelmann told C21.

It will continue to cover movies, computer games, comics and books, but in a “more grown-up style” with humour, edge and references that viewers who have followed the series since it began will understand, DR said.

DR is in the process of making all of its children’s output online-only, with kids’ channel DR Ultra set to close as a linear net next year. The move has been in the pipeline since 2016.
