DR Int’l leads BBC4 into State of Happiness

Maipo Film created State of Happiness for Norwegian pubcaster NRK

UK pubcaster BBC4 has acquired an eight-part Scandinavian period drama focusing on the Norwegian oil boom of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

State of Happiness was originally produced by Oslo-based indie Maipo Film for Norwegian pubcaster NRK and has been shopped to BBC4 in the UK by Danish distributor DR International Sales.

The 8×60’ series focuses on three teenagers living in a small Norwegian town that is transformed when an enormous oil reserve is discovered off its coast. The plot is set between 1969 and 1972.

The series is directed by Petter Næss and Pål Jackman and head writer is Mette M Bølstad. The producers are Synnøve Hørsdal and Ales Ree.

BBC4, which has previously enjoyed ratings success with Scandi noir since bringing The Killing to the UK in 2011, will premiere its latest acquisition in the summer.
