DogTV collars Discovery

MIPTV: Discovery Communications has struck a strategic partnership with a 24-hour television network created just for dogs.

The investment in DogTV will enable the canine network to grow, as well as opening up potential collaborations with Discovery-owned Animal Planet.

Discovery Communications’ backing follows a period of rapid US and international growth for DogTV. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, the network is now available in South Korea and is set to enter Japan and other markets this year.

“More than 40 million American households own dogs, and they are spending more than US$55.8bn annually on their pets. It’s a thriving industry,” said DogTV’s chairman, Yossi Uzrad.

Dan Fox, senior VP of corporate development for Discovery, called DogTV “a natural fit” with Discovery Communications.

According to DogTV, its programming has been scientifically developed and tested, and specifically designed for dogs’ eyes and ears, and “is a proven tool for relieving stress and anxiety for stay-at-home dogs,” said Gilad Neumann, CEO of DogTV.

Pet experts involved in DogTV content include trainer Victoria Stilwell, star of Animal Planet’s It’s Me or the Dog, and well-known US vet Dr Marty Becker, the author of 22 books and a frequent guest on Good Morning America and The Dr Oz Show.

Rick Holzman, exec VP of programming and strategy at Animal Planet, indicated the strategic partnership between the two companies could open up innovative programming avenues.
