Dog Years leads Nelson Nutmeg into TV

Dog Years debuted on AVoD service Kidoodle.TV

UK kids- and family-focused prodco Nelson Nutmeg Pictures has ventured into series for the first time and is taking its first show to the international market.

Nelson Nutmeg was launched by Jan Caston, Tim Clague and Danny Stack six years ago to specialise in live-action films for children and families.

It is now launching live-action series Dog Years, which has already made its debut on children’s AVoD platform Kidoodle.TV and will begin on Swedish kids’ app Jaramba this month, followed by Japanese streaming channel MeInteractive in March.

The 10×7’ series is a preschool show about a dog called Dash growing up with a new family. The family doesn’t speak ‘dog’ so all Dash hears is nonsense, meaning international buyers would only have to dub Dash’s voice, making it more cost-effective than other shows.

Nelson Nutmeg hopes Dog Years will appeal to international buyers who want localised content but don’t necessarily have the budgets to produce potentially costly live-action shows for children.

Writers on the series include Debbie Moon (CBBC’s Wolfblood) and Tim John (A Streetcat Named Bob).

Caston said: “We believe children love to see real people, and dogs, having adventures in their own language. Just because a territory can’t afford to shoot a whole series locally, it doesn’t mean children should miss out.”

Nelson Nutmeg has a further two live-action series in development. Aimed at 8-12s, Enormouse is a comedy about two siblings and their pet mouse that can transform into a 6ft tall fast-talking rodent, while King Donkey is a comedy drama aimed at the same age group about a young family forced to look after granny’s donkey sanctuary.

Also in Nelson Nutmeg’s TV line-up is Me & My Castle, a ‘fish out of water’ sitcom about an American teenager who suddenly discovers that she comes from British nobility and moves to England to live in a castle. A treatment for the series is available.
