Doctor Who heads to HBO Max

Jodie Whittaker in long-running BBC hit Doctor Who

HBO Max, the forthcoming streaming service from WarnerMedia-owned US network HBO, has acquired the exclusive streaming rights to BBC Studios’ sci-fi series Doctor Who.

Under the deal, all 11 seasons of Doctor Who made since the classic series was rebooted in 2005 will be available on HBO Max upon the platform’s launch next year. The streaming service will also get exclusive SVoD rights for future seasons, including season 12 after it has made its US debut on BBC America.

In related news, HBO Max has licensed 700 episodes of BBC series including mockumentary The Office, motoring show Top Gear, crime drama Luther and miniseries The Honorable Woman.

It has also acquired comedies Pure, Trigonometry, Stath Lets Flats and Ghosts, which will all be available exclusively on HBO Max in the US at launch.

HBO Max, due to launch later this year, brings HBO content together with programming from Warner Bros, New Line, DC Entertainment, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, The CW, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth and Looney Tunes.

It will also feature new programming from The CW network, including Batwoman and Katy Keene, plus original movies from Greg Berlanti and Reese Witherspoon and hits from Warner Bros Television’s library, such as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Pretty Little Liars.
