DNI will air Jennifer Peedom’s Sherpa in more than 200 territories next year, with the film exploring how the mountain’s Sherpa community united after April’s deadly avalanche killed 16 of its members.

The show was coproduced with Bridget Ikin, co-founder of Australian outfit Felix Media, and John Smithson, joint creative director of UK indie Arrow Media.

The project originally began as a documentary about the forthcoming climbing season from the Sherpas’ point of view after a highly publicised confrontation in 2013 between Western climbers and a group of Sherpas. Instead, it captured the single deadliest day in the mountain’s history after an avalanche struck just above Mount Everest base camp.

The show will also air on Discovery Channel, which has already broadcast a doc about the disaster using footage filmed in preparation for Everest Jump Live, which was aborted following the tragedy.
