Disney to use TV to tease Musical reboot

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series

MIPJUNIOR: ABC, Disney Channel and Freeform will debut the first episode of the Disney+ High School Musical reboot in the US ahead of its release on the direct-to-consumer streaming service.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will premiere on the three Disney-owned networks on Friday November 8 at 20.00 EST ahead of the launch of Disney+ on November 12. Subsequent episodes will be exclusive to the SVoD service.

It is not yet clear whether the Mouse House is planning to pursue the same release strategy with episodes of other Disney+ originals, which include The Mandalorian, set in the Star Wars universe, and doc series The World According to Jeff Goldblum.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series follows a group of drama students and faculty members at East High, the Utah high school where the original High School Musical movie was filmed.

Created and executive produced by screenwriter, novelist and librettist Tim Federle, the 10-episode series charts the characters going from auditions to opening night of their school’s first-ever production of High School Musical: The Musical.

Filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah, the first episode was directed by Tamra Davis. Oliver Goldstick, Bill Borden, Barry Rosenbush and Davis also serve as exec producers of the first episode.

The original High School Musical film launched on Disney Channel in 2006 and was followed by two sequels, helping to launch the careers of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

Launching in the US, Canada and the Netherlands on November 12, Disney+ will be the dedicated streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and others. It is set to arrive in Australia and New Zealand on November 19.

The direct-to-consumer streaming service will offer ad-free programming with a variety of original feature-length films, documentaries, live-action and animated series and shortform content.

In addition to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, The Mandalorian and The World According to Jeff Goldblum, other original programming available at launch includes the films Lady & the Tramp and Noelle and unscripted series Marvel’s Hero Project.

Disney+ will release the first episode of the latter on November 12, with two subsequent episodes arriving on November 15 and 22. Subsequent episodes will then premiere every Friday on Disney+.
