Discovery floats Concordia special

Discovery in the US is preparing to air a one-off documentary on the salvage operation currently taking place to recover the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship off the coast of Italy.

Inside Raising Concordia, a one-hour special, will air on Friday September 20 at 22.00 (ET/PT) on Discovery Channel before rolling out to 220 territories around the world.

The Darlow Smithson-produced doc will focus on attempts to recover the Costa Concordia which struck rocks near the island of Giglio in January last year and capsized, killing 32 passengers.

The ship has remained on its side in the water ever since, posing an increasing environmental hazard, but an operation to right it and tow it back to land began in earnest this week. Time lapse footage of the operation is being made available via Discovery’s website from tomorrow.

Endemol-owned Darlow Smithson previously produced quick turnaround doc Cruise Ship Disaster: Inside the Concordia for Discovery at the time of the original accident.

A legal case against the ship’s captain Francseco Schettino for manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship is ongoing in Italy.
