Discovery, 560 strike secondary deal

Discovery Communications has agreed a secondary rights deal with recently launched UK-based global rights collection agency 560 Media.

The arrangement will see 560 collect international revenues generated by Discovery’s secondary TV rights and marks the agency’s first major broadcast client.

Almost 40 producers and distributors have signed up with 560 since it launched in December, including UK indie Hat Trick and distributor TCB Media Rights.

The company, which offers “bespoke systems” for the registration, monitoring, collecting and dispersal of royalties, was launched by John O’Sullivan, the co-founder and former CEO of Compact Collections.

560 claims the UK secondary television rights market is worth an estimated £50m (US$62m) per annum but the income stream often remains unpaid because of the specialist work needed to track and claim payments.

James Bryant, director of global music services at Discovery Communications, said: “During the past 18 months Discovery Communications has reinforced its focus on secondary rights management for our catalogue of high-quality content, which satisfies curiosity, entertains, and inspires viewers worldwide.

“560 Media’s fresh and flexible approach to catalogue representation will assist Discovery in this specialist area, allowing us to maximise remuneration in the international arena.”

In May, 560 Media appointed former Compact Media Group executive Ben Richards as its director of operations.
