Digital MipTV details unveiled

Mipcom in Cannes in 2019

Events organiser Reed Midem has revealed the details of its latest edition of annual conference MipTV, which is being held digitally for the second year in a row because of the pandemic.

Digital MipTV, the 58th edition of the spring international television market, normally held in Cannes, will take place between April 12 and 16.

It will focus on one-to-one ‘matchmaking’ meetings, thematic speed meetings, workshops and mentoring, as well as featuring sessions with buyers and commissioners. The sister MipDoc and MipFormats events will be brought together for the first time.

Delegates will be able to choose from a digital pass, which covers the entire market; a one-to-one distribution market pass for documentary, format and factual distributors and buyers, which covers April 13-15; and a one-to-one coproduction and development forum pass, for unscripted producers, distributors, buyers and commissioners, which is also for April 13-15.

The digital pass is for all genres and offers online market access to the week-long programme of thematic speed meetings, workshops, mentoring, market intel, conferences, breakout sessions and networking.

All pass-holders will have access to the Digital MipTV networking marketplace from March 29 and all content will be available to catch up online until May 14.

Lucy Smith, deputy director of Reed Midem’s television division, said: “Even as we are looking forward to getting back to physical markets, digital has a big part to play in the future.”

Digital MipTV will be preceded by pre-market Discovery Showcases on April 9, while Canneseries is currently scheduled to take place as a physical event from April 9 to 14.

Last year, Reed suffered a blow to business after both MipTV and fellow Cannes event Mipcom were moved online because of the pandemic. The company has made no further announcement about the status of the latter, which is currently due to go ahead in physical form in October.

The event was rebranded as Mipcom Rendezvous Cannes last year as part of an attempt to make it compliant with coronavirus safety measures. But despite cutting the event’s duration and removing exhibition stands from the Palais, the market was eventually moved online because of tightening restrictions.
