Spanish-language media giant TelevisaUnivision this week promoted Pierluigi Gazzolo to CEO of its fast-growing streaming service ViX and elevated Rodrigo Mazón to executive VP and chief content officer, responsible for both the subscription and ad-supported sides of the enterprise.
ViX went live with its AVoD offering in March last year before the SVoD version followed in July, with the service combining 40,000 hours of programming from predecessor Blim TV, plus former Lionsgate-owned streamer Pantaya, with 70 new original titles commissioned in its first year.
Mazón spoke to Jonathan Webdale about his priorities in his new role, the challenges facing the Latin America region right now, and opportunities for overseas players looking to work with ViX.
A Mexican version of US sitcom Superstore debuted on TV Azteca last year following a coproduction deal between local producer Dopamine and NBC Universal International Formats.
It was the latter’s first such scripted deal in Latin America, where the company continues to enjoy success with unscripted hits like Top Chef. NBCUniversal International Formats senior VP of format sales and production Ana Langenberg spoke to Jonathan at Content Americas in Miami about building on these developments and the growing significance of Spanish-language programming.
RMVistar is the Los Angeles-based distributor that brought Argentinian telenovela La chica que limpia to Fox in the US as The Cleaning Lady and the company is now hunting partners for its latest project, a drama about Dominican merengue superstar Milly Quezada.
Company president Rose Marie Vega talked to Jonathan at Content Americas about the project, originally conceived as a movie but now likely to end up a series, and about the importance of telling authentic Latin and US Hispanic stories.
