One of India’s most prolific writers, producers and directors, Richie Mehta – the creator of Poacher and Delhi Crime – is set to share his thoughts on how to create a hit global drama at Content India in March.

The three-day event takes place from March 16-18 at the Taj Lands End hotel in Mumbai, bringing together the leading players in the domestic market with key international execs to facilitate partnerships that create a new form of hybrid content than can work locally and also be an international hit.

Mehta created, wrote and directed eight-part Prime Video drama series Poacher, a thriller that illustrates the largest wildlife crime investigation in Indian history. It was released in February 2024 to great acclaim.

Prior to that, he created, wrote and directed seven-part Netflix series Delhi Crime (2019), revolving around the Delhi Police’s investigation into the infamous gang-rape of a young medical student on a bus in 2012.

It won India’s first International Emmy for Best Drama Series, as well as the Asian Academy Awards for Best Drama Series and Best Director, and has gone on for multiple seasons on Netflix.

His first feature film, Amal (2007), won over 30 international awards and was nominated for six Genie awards, including Best Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay. He then wrote and directed I’ll Follow You Down (2013), a sci-fi drama starring Gillian Anderson; and Siddharth (2013), a Hindi-language film that premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Siddharth received over 25 international awards.

In 2016, Mehta directed feature documentary India in a Day, which tracks a day in the life of the country and was executive produced by Ridley Scott. He also directed an episode of Apple TV anthology series Extrapolations (2023).

He will be part of a session titled How to Create a Global Hit Drama, in which leading international executives and creatives will discuss how to make local stories work for global audiences. From story to script development, casting, financing models, partners and coproduction strategies, they will uncover the secrets behind turning local scripted stories into global hits.

Content India has a mission to connect the domestic market with international partners to capture billions in potentially unrealised value.
