De Mensen serves Kim Clijsters doc

Newen-owned Belgian production company De Mensen is developing a documentary on former world-number-one women’s tennis player Kim Clijsters.

The doc will showcase the Belgian star’s second comeback, after she announced her plan to return to professional tennis in 2020 earlier this week, and will explore what it takes for Clijsters to combine the sport with her life as a mother of three.

A camera crew has been filming and following Clijsters for the past six months, though no other production parties or broadcasting partners are in play yet.

Clijsters became only the third female tennis player to win a Grand Slam after giving birth, after Margaret Court and Evonne Goolagong, when she won the US Open in 2009. She returned to the number-one spot on February 14, 2011. The Belgian holds 41 career singles titles and 11 career doubles titles.

De Mensen also produces Belgium’s longest-running daily gameshow, Blokken, and award-winning dramas Hotel Beau Séjour, Undercover and Professor T, all of which air in several territories across the globe.

In March this year, French producer and distributor Newen acquired a majority stake in De Mensen.
