David Blaine stunt to air live on YouTube

YouTube is set to stream illusionist and endurance artist David Blaine’s first live stunt in almost a decade.

Multi-hour special David Blaine Ascension will see Blaine float through the air suspended by helium-filled balloons as he attempts to cross the Hudson river and travel from New Jersey to his native New York City.

The stunt is due to take place on August 31, weather permitting.

Blaine has partnered with YouTube for exclusive live specials before, including in May 2002, when he spent 35 hours standing unsupported on a 100-foot high, 22-inch wide pillar in New York City.

The plans for Ascension were revealed at the Television Critics Association event in January this year. The event is representative of YouTube’s new original production strategy, with the platform moving away from scripted content and focusing on live events, music and celebrity-fronted content.
