CW, AMC streamers treated to Trickster

Trickster debuted on the CBC last month

US network The CW and AMC Networks’ Sundance Now and Shudder streaming services have acquired a recently launched Canadian supernatural drama from Abacus Media Rights (AMR).

Trickster (6×60′), based on the book trilogy Son of a Trickster written by Eden Robinson, launched on Canadian pubcaster the CBC last month. A second season has already been commissioned.

The show follows an Indigenous teen struggling to keep his dysfunctional family above water, holding down an after-school job and selling ecstasy to support his partying mum, his unemployable dad and his new girlfriend.

But when he starts seeing strange things – talking ravens, doppelgängers and skin monsters – his already chaotic life is turned upside down.

The US premiere of Trickster is planned for January 12 on The CW, followed by the SVoD release on Sundance Now and Shudder, which will stream the director’s cut of the series after completion of The CW’s broadcast run.

From Canadian producers Sienna Films and Streel Films, the series has also been sold to Sky in the UK for SyFy; NITV and SBS On Demand in Australia; and Globoplay in Brazil.

Trickster was created by Streel Films’ Michelle Latimer with Tony Elliott, alongside executive producers Jennifer Kawaja and Julia Sereny from Sienna Films, a Sphere Media company. All six episodes are directed by Latimer.

Jonathan Ford, MD of AMR, a member of the Amcomri Media Group, said: “With its focus on diversity and a unique form of storytelling, Trickster will have strong appeal to global viewers, particularly the elusive younger-adult audience.”
