Curtain falls on Please Like Me

Please Like Me

Please Like Me’s fourth season has been confirmed as its last

The creator, writer and star of idiosyncratic Australian comedy/drama Please Like Me has decided to end the show after four series.

Josh Thomas, who starred in the LGBT-themed, semi-autobiographical series, said today that he and the producers felt the series was complete.

The final season premiered on pubcaster ABC in November. It was acquired by Amazon Prime for the UK and Ireland and premiered in the US on Hulu in January. Netflix has the rights to all four series in the rest of the world, including the second window in Australia for the last season.

The decision to call a halt was not related to the closure of Participant Media’s US cablenet Pivot, which co-commissioned the second, third and fourth series produced by Pigeon Fancier and John & Josh International, producer Kevin Whyte told C21.

“This decision was creative – the storyline in the fourth season really tied up our series beautifully and it felt like it was time to leave it where it is,” said Whyte. “None of the parties involved in season four indicated they wouldn’t have been on board for season five; we made the decision to wrap up before we got into the season five discussions.“

Please Like Me saw Thomas star as a gay man and revolved around his relationships with his divorced parents and friends. The last series caused some controversy in Australia because it dealt with the aftermath of the suicide of the mother of Thomas’s character.

Fellow producer Todd Abbott said: “Across four seasons, Please Like Me has chronicled Josh’s entire 20s, but that period in his life has come to a conclusion.”

ABC head of comedy Rick Kalowski added: “It’s with a sad heart that ABC TV farewells Please Like Me – among our very finest and most acclaimed series ever. Whatever is next for Josh in television, ABC will want to be there.”
