Leading factual commissioners and execs boost Content London unscripted agenda

The History Channel, Paramount, Sky, Channel 4, Plimsoll and AMPLE Entertainment are the latest broadcasters and producers to join the Formats and Factual strand at Content London as unscripted television moves in alongside drama.

This year Content London will run three full days of Formats & Factual, consolidating its position as the most vital development marketplace in the global calendar. The world’s leading international formats and factual commissioners, producers and executives will share their strategies, new slates and opportunities for coproduction, making it a must-attend for content creators in the genre.

Joining the line-up:

Mary Donahue
SVP, development and programming
The History Channel
Donahue is responsible for managing all production, overseeing a slate that includes premium drama documentaries and new and returning series. Donahue’s slate of returning series includes Curse of Oak Island, Secrets of Skinwalker Ranch, Food That Built America, Mountain Men and American Pickers. She is also developing spin-offs of Pawn Stars and Swamp People, two definitive hits she launched. Prior to History, Donahue served as SVP non-fiction programming at Lifetime, where she helped produce The Rap Game and the Little Women series. Recent History projects include Grant with executive producer Leonardo DiCaprio and Abraham Lincoln with Pulitzer Prize winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin. Committed to diverse storytelling, Donahue and the History team are currently producing projects ranging from Titans of the Ancient World to Sitting Bull and Harlem Hell Fighters. Prior to joining A+E, Donahue worked at Discovery Channel. There, she developed and launched a broad slate of shows, including the Emmy nominated Expedition series with the BBC Natural History Unit, Man vs. Wild, and Cash Cab. She also worked at The Oprah Winfrey Show for six years and for ABC News, NBC News, USA Today, TLC, and CNN. Programs Donahue developed have earned 20 Emmy nominations, Donahue has been nominated for ten Emmys and won four times.

Adrian Padmore

Channel 5 & Paramount+
Padmore is commissioning editor, unscripted, Channel 5 & Paramount+. At Channel 5 he is responsible for commissioning peak-time factual and factual entertainment series including Inside the Force, Nick Knowles Big Railway Adventure, Lost Boy: Murder of James Bulger and ABBA: The Missing 40 Years. Poppy Dixon

Dixon is Sky UK’s director of documentaries and factual, where she is responsible for all original commissioning for Sky Documentaries, Sky Nature and Sky Crime. Since the launch of the factual channels in 2020, Sky has forged a path as a destination for premium narrative driven box-set series, feature documentaries and bold natural history programming, with Sky Documentaries winning the Broadcast Digital Award for Best Factual Channel, only a year after its launch. Some of the key successes for the factual channels since launch include The Princess, Liverpool Narcos, Ghislaine Maxwell: Epstein’s Shadow, Tina, Murder in the Valleys and Shark: with Steve Backshall. Before joining Sky, Dixon had been a producer and development executive for over 15 years, with credits including Misha and the Wolves, Untouchable, The Imposter, American Animals and Three Identical Strangers.

Alf Lawrie
Head of factual entertainment
Channel 4
Lawrie has been Channel 4’s head of factual entertainment since 2018. His team are responsible for some of the portfolio’s best-loved shows including The Great British Bake Off, the revamped Married At First Sight, and Gogglebox. Recent output includes Open House: The Great Sex Experiment, The Simpler Life and 60 Days With The Gypsies. Upcoming commissions include Rise & Fall and Alone. Before joining Channel 4, Lawrie was an executive producer at Blast! and Shine.

Martha Holmes
Chief creative officer of natural history & science
Plimsoll
Holmes is chief creative officer of natural history & science. A BAFTA and Emmy award-winning producer, she runs a 150 strong natural history department, overseeing wildlife and adventure productions from landmark blue-chip series such as Tiny World (Apple TV+), Animal (Netflix), Night on Earth (Netflix) and Hostile Planet (Nat Geo), to hosted series including On the Edge with Alex Honnold (Disney+) and John Bishop’s Great Whale Rescue (ITV). Holmes also heads up the environmental and conservation shows such as Patagonia: Life on The Edge Of The World. Holmes’ scientific knowledge (she holds a PhD in marine biology), combined with celebrated storytelling skills and a hunger to embrace and develop the latest technology in filmmaking has put her at the forefront of her genre. She was instrumental in creating two recent series for National Geographic: Super/Natural, a James Cameron-executive produced and Benedict Cumberbatch-narrated series that deploys the latest technology to delve into the secret powers of the world’s most extraordinary creatures; and Great Migrations, which tracks several species’ dramatic annual journeys to locate food, shelter and safe breeding territories. Prior, Holmes worked for BBC natural history unit where her credits include the acclaimed series Blue Planet and Life.
