Joining the line up:

Candice Carty-Williams
Writer/author
Carty-Williams is best known as the writer and author of the Sunday Times bestselling novel Queenie, which has been described as vital, disarmingly honest, and boldly political, and has been shortlisted for the Waterstones, Foyles and Goodreads Book of 2019, as well as selected as the Blackwell’s Debut of the Year. Queenie also won Book of the Year at the 2020 British Book Awards. Next year, Carty-Williams’ first major TV series Champion will air on BBC One and Netflix. The eight-part series is set to be followed by Carty-Williams’ second TV show, an adaptation of her 2019 novel Queenie, which will be available to watch on Channel4 and Disney. In 2016, Carty-Williams created and launched the Guardian and 4th Estate BAME Short Story Prize, the first inclusive initiative of its kind in book publishing. Candice has written for Guardian, i-D, The Face, Vogue, every iteration of the Sunday Times, BEAT Magazine, Black Ballad and more. She will probably always live in South London.

Amy Jephta
Writer/director
Nagvlug Films
Jephta is a screenwriter and director who lives and works in Cape Town. Her feature film screenwriting includes South Africa’s official 2018 Golden Globes submission, Ellen: The Ellen Pkkies Story and her directorial debut, Barakat. The latter marked a first time selection for a South African woman of colour when it became the country’s official entry for the Academy Awards. She was lead writer on Catch Me A Killer (Night Train Media/M-Net) and writer and associate producer on Devils Peak (BBC Studios/Lookout Point), both currently in production for 2023 release. Amy has previously been named one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Top Young South Africans, is the recipient of South Africa’s highest art accolade, the Standard Bank Young Artist Award (for Theatre). She now focuses on producing for film and television via her company, Nagvlug Films, with series and feature projects in development for Fremantle, Amazon and Netflix and collaborations with Morgan Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment, 42, and David and Jessica Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon Productions in the works. She is repped by CAA and 3Arts Entertainment.

NneNne Iwuji
Head writer and director
Chudor House Productions
Whilst maintaining a successful career as a diplomat in both Latin America and Africa, Iwuji studied filmmaking at the New York Film Academy, King’s College London. She has won several prizes for her short films and has also been short-listed in Steven Spielberg’s competition for new directors. Iwuji is director at Chudor House Productions, head writer on the Chudor team, and has various TV series in development as well as writing on several third-party projects. She is currently writing on Netflix’s hybrid docuseries African Queens from Westbrook Studios and Nutopia, as well as Anyway Content’s thriller series City of Graves. She is also about to complete her first novel, Anika’s Daughter.

Peres Owino
Writer/director
Nyar Nam Productions
Owino is the award winning Kenyan-American writer/director of Bound: Africans vs African-Americans, winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at PAFF, The Basket Weaver; winner of the NYWIFT Writer’s Lab supported by Meryl Streep and Seasons of Love nominated for an NAACP Image Award in writing. Her latest film projects, include the short films Stray, produced by 20th Century Fox Digital as part of Hulu’s Best of Huluween and Glimpse. She has also developed various works for the stage. Owino is currently working on the Jada Pinkett Smith produced series African Queens for Netflix and developing projects for WBTV and Gaumont TV. She is repped at Creative Artist Agency.
