C21 launches Fundamentals at Content London and companion funding & finance resource

C21Media has announced a new initiative titled Fundamentals, which will become a cornerstone strand at Content London 2022, and a new online resource of the same name to provide comprehensive analysis of content funding & finance for companies in the international television business.

The first Fundamentals session to be confirmed features leading players in the sector, who will discuss the current state of the M&A space across the TV world. Jane Turton, All3Media; Thomas Dey, ACF; Marina Williams, Asacha Media and Danny Cohen, Access Entertainment will consider the current state of the market and look ahead to what we can expect in 2023. They will examine how investors are aiming to spend their money, what models make the most sense, and how the market will evolve over the next year.

A raft of further sessions in the Fundamentals strand will be programmed across the three-day event, covering distribution finance, coproduction finance and new content funding initiatives.

Fundamentals will also launch as a premium resource on this month, providing comprehensive information about each type of finance and fund available for content producers to access worldwide. C21 previously provided this information as part of its annual Content Finance Report and the Content Funding Forum, which launched in 2013.

Fundamentals will also run a standalone funding & finance event in Spring 2023, and the brand will feed into C21’s annual Content Trends Report, which publishes in December.

Jane Turton, CEO, All3Media
Appointed CEO in 2015, Turton has built All3Media, owned jointly by Warner Bros. Discovery and Liberty Global, into a fast-growing, world-class content business of more than 40 award-winning independent production, distribution and digital media companies, producing content for broadcasters and digital platforms globally.
All3Media’s productions span scripted, factual, natural history, entertainment, children’s, sports and digital content. All3Media International, the Group’s distribution division, sells a catalogue of over 25,000 hours of content to more than 1,000 broadcasters and platforms worldwide. Little Dot Studios, All3Media’s digital business, hosts over 6000 titles, has 34 channels and reaches over 25million global YouTube subscribers a year.
Turton joined All3Media in 2008 as deputy COO, becoming COO in 2011. She has held the positions of director of commercial and business affairs and director of business affairs at ITV Studios and then ITV Network, as well as roles at Granada Television, United Productions, and Meridian Broadcasting.
Turton is the chair of the Royal Television Society board of trustees and in June 2022, was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Jubilee birthday honours for her services to the television production industry.

Thomas Dey, founder and CEO, ACF Investment Bank
Dey is the founder and CEO of ACF, a leading global Investment Bank, specialised in selling, buying, fundraising, and pre and post deal services for brands and businesses in intellectual property, content creation and international distribution. With offices in the UK and USA, Dey and the ACF team have advised on over 100 transactions in the media and entertainment sector with a combined transaction value of over $6 billion plus.
Some of Dey’s high profile transactions include, sale of NENT Studios to Fremantle, sale of Critical Content to SK Global, advising Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones (Black Mirror creators) on the sale of their company, Broke and Bones to Netflix, advising Plimsoll Productions on its fundraise from Lloyds Development Capital, the sale of Left Bank Pictures (Crown creators) to Sony, Bear Grylls Ventures to Banijay, Paddington Bear Intellectual Property to Studio Canal, Pilgrim Studios to Lionsgate, Leftfield Entertainment to ITV Plc, Love Productions to Sky, and Top Gear on behalf of Jeremy Clarkson to BBC.

Marina Williams, co-founder and co-CEO, Asacha Media Group
Prior to co-founding Asacha Media Group, Williams was COO of International Operations at Endemol Shine Group (2015-2019), overseeing the company’s growth across Central and Eastern Europe, India, the Middle East and Africa. Before the merger with Shine Group, Williams led Endemol’s operations in Central and Eastern Europe as regional CEO, while also overseeing the MENA region (2008-2013). She was previously executive vice president and a member of the management board of Central European Media Enterprises (CME). Before joining CME, Williams played leading roles in launching and overseeing businesses in Central and Eastern Europe for Fox International Channels, Fox Kids and Turner International Channels.

Danny Cohen, president, Access Entertainment
Cohen is president of Access Entertainment, where he invests in feature films,
television, live theatre, the creator economy and gaming. Access Entertainment is currently co‐financing seven feature films with talent ranging from Joaquin Phoenix to Ralph Fiennes, Florence Pugh to Zac Efron. Investments in television have focused on equity stakes in production businesses that have included A24 and Bad Wolf. Over 50% of Access Entertainment’s investments are in digital content. Access is co‐owner of Spotter, a Californian YouTube financing business which has invested over $500m in creators to date. Investments in gaming include the UK’s third fastest growing private company, the mobile games business Tripledot Studios, and the innovative Scandinavian gaming platform, Portal One. Access Entertainment also owns the Theatre Royal Haymarket and invests in plays and musicals on Broadway and the West End. Before joining Access, Cohen was the director of BBC Television, where he was responsible for the BBC’s television networks and BBC Productions. Prior to that, he was the controller of BBC One and BBC Three, and the controller of E4 and the head of Channel 4 documentaries.
