Endeavor, CAA, Players Agency, 42, DoveTale Media talk ‘agents’ at CL

How is the talent agent role changing and how does this impact the international drama business? In this one hour session we explore the new business models coming out of the US and Europe and hear from some of the leading players about the new approaches they are taking.

Lorenzo De Maio, partner, Endeavor Content
De Maio is a partner at Endeavor Content, a division of global entertainment leader Endeavor (formerly WME | IMG). In his role, De Maio oversees the Television Sales and Advisory group, focusing on packaging, financing and selling global television shows. De Maio works with content creators, third-party financiers, and US and international networks to create optimal ownership and distribution solutions for projects.  Endeavor Content’s television series include the Emmy and Golden-Globe Award winning drama The Night Manager, the Emmy-nominated programs Killing Eve, Chef’s Table and The Young Pope, the critically acclaimed Top of the Lake: China Girl, global hit The Grand Tour, the new series The First from Beau Willimon, and upcoming projects See from Steven Knight and Francis Lawrence, and Damien Chazelle’s The Eddy.

Ted Miller, partner, CAA
Miller is partner at leading entertainment and sports agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Miller works in the Los Angeles office and represents many of the world’s leading television producers, writers, directors, and showrunners, including Jason Bateman, Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies, Black Work), Noah Hawley (Fargo), Doug Liman and David Bartis (Suits, Covert Affairs), Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Lost), Andrew Marlowe (Castle), Clyde Phillips (Dexter), Marc Webb (Limitless, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The Amazing Spiderman, 500 Days of Summer), and Matt Weiner (Mad Men). Miller, who joined CAA in 1991, was previously an investment banker at Shearson Lehman Hutton. Miller studied at Colorado College and the London School of Economics.

Fabian Haslob, agent, Players Agency
Fabian is a lawyer turned agent from Players Agency based in Berlin representing writers, directors and cinematographers. Players closely cooperates with several London based agencies. Among its clients are the directors of mini series such as Babylon Berlin (Henk Handloegten, Achim von Borries), Dogs of Berlin (Christian Alvart), Bad Banks (Christian Schwochow), 4 BLOCKS (Marvin Kren), Das Boot (Andreas Prochaska), West of Liberty (Barbara Eder), GENERATION WAR, SS-GB (Philipp Kadelbach), Same Sky (Oliver Hirschbiegel) and creators / showrunners such as Deutschland 83/86 (Anna Winger) and Hackerville (Ralph Martin).


Josh Varney, co-founder, 42
Josh started his career in business television as an assistant producer creating content for Star TV, Euronews and Bloomberg before moving to ICM as an assistant to Literary agent Michael McCoy. At ICM, and then the rebranded Independent Talent Group, Josh represented and continues to rep a number of leading writers and directors including Academy awards winners and nominees Terry George, William Monahan, Daniel Barber, Ruairi Robinson and Peter Cattaneo. He built a reputation for discovering new talent including Tom Harper, Daniel Wolfe, Nima Nourizedah, Ben Schiffer and Jay Basu, and structuring Indy finance on behalf of his clients. Josh left ITG in 2012 and founded 42, an integrated management and production company alongside partners Rory Aitken, Kate Buckley and Ben Pugh.

Justin Thomson, executive producer, DoveTail Media
DoveTale Media was set up by Justin at the end of 2017 to provide both a media consultancy and a packaging business specialising in co-production, pre-sales and the structuring of deals.  Currently DoveTale is providing media consultancy services for distributors, broadcasters, production companies and individuals as well as putting together big European projects for both the SVOD and non-SVOD market.  
Over the last few years Justin has put together a number of high profile projects executive producing the award winning and critically acclaimed The Fall for BBC/Netflix, The Frankenstein Chronicles for ITV/Netflix  starring Sean Bean, the Welsh BAFTA winning Bang for S4C, the  BBC 1 fantasy serial  Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell  and the ABC/Shaw show Combat Hospital  for ABC. Other projects he packaged include Death Comes to Pemberley (Mathew Rhys and Jenna Coleman), Sweeney Todd (Ray Winstone), The Wind in the Willows (Matt Lucas and Bob Hoskins), The Last Enemy (Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Carlyle), Thorne (David Morrisey, Eddie Marsan, Sandra Oh, Aiden Gillen, Natasha McElhone) and Crimson Petal and the White (Chris O'Dowd and Romola Garai). Justin regularly works with all the major agencies in the US and has access to top end writing and acting talent on both sides of the Atlantic.
