CNN Films, HBO Max and Focus Features have teamed up for a documentary feature about the life of late chef, author and travel documentarian Anthony Bourdain.

Focus Features will release the as-yet-untitled documentary in theatres globally before it hits TV on CNN and then streams on HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s forthcoming SVoD service.

Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) will direct the doc, which is being executive produced by CNN Films and HBO Max and produced by Neville’s Tremolo Productions.

Bourdain became a globally recognised celebrity through his CNN Films and TV series, including Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, where he travelled the world experiencing different cultures through food. He died in 2018.

Zero Point Zero Production (ZPZ) founders Lydia Tenaglia and Christopher Collins, who worked with Bourdain for more than 20 years, will serve as consulting producers for the film. Kimberly Witherspoon, Bourdain’s long-time agent and literary executor, will also serve as a consulting producer. The Bourdain estate will provide access to family photos, home movies, letters, music and other content.

The Bourdain documentary is the third film collaboration to be announced between CNN Films and HBO Max, which are already working on features The Scoop (working title) and Persona (w/t).

“Anthony Bourdain did more to help us understand each other than just about anyone in the history of television. He connected with people not in spite of his flaws, but because of them. To have the opportunity to tell his story is humbling. CNN is in the DNA of Tony’s work, and the perfect partners in this journey,” said Neville.
