CJ E&M’s drama production outfit Studio Dragon has signed a memorandum of understanding with DramaFever that will see the two companies develop and produce two originals within the next three years.

The duo will also explore ways to work on remakes of existing films and television dramas.

The production arm was launched by CJ E&M in May as a way to improve its global competitiveness, with the company also working with OTT services around the world to explore demand for Korean dramas.

“Studio Dragon is determined to become Asia’s number one drama studio and in order to achieve that goal we plan to work with industry leaders at home and abroad to provide unrivalled content for audiences,” said Jinnie Choi, president of Studio Dragon.

Choi added that the company was also extending its efforts across content development, storytelling and production through “international partnerships and coproduction deals,” without revealing details.

Craig Hunegs, president of business and strategy at Warner Bros Television Group, revealed the news at the Broadcast World Wide event in Seoul and said the deal came as K-pop and Korean drama’s influence was growing on the global stage.

South Korean drama has been rising in popularity, with companies including Keshet International picking up local properties for global markets.

Netflix is moving into the Korean originals space and has already ordered a feature film there, while yesterday Amazon moved into the country’s production space by commissioning a show about the country’s K-pop scene.

DramaFever was acquired by Warner Bros from Japan’s SoftBank Group earlier this year.
