Cinemax in Sky copro first

HBO’s Cinemax channel has come onboard as coproduction partner for the second season of BSkyB’s drama Strike Back, marking the first copro between the two pay nets.

UK indie Left Bank Pictures will resume production duties and in addition to the show making its US debut on HBO Cinemax, it will increase its run from six to 10 parts.

The coproduction builds on the existing relationship between Sky and HBO. Sky Atlantic HD, which Sky calls “the home of HBO” in the UK and Ireland, launched to Sky subscribers on February 1.

The renewal of Strike Back continues Sky’s new emphasis on drama. After the show’s first season and other commissions The Take and Thorne, Sky has Mad Dogs, Treasure Island and The Runaway in the production pipeline.

“This ambitious coproduction highlights the importance of creating compelling original drama for our customers,” said Elaine Pyke, Sky’s head of drama.

Strike Back is based on the novels written by a former SAS soldier under the pseudonym Chris Ryan. The series producer is Michael Casey with Trevor Hopkins and Sue De Beauvoir producing in South Africa and Hungary respectively. It stars Richard Armitage.
