CineGroupe picks up $9m from SGF Tech

Canadian production outfit CineGroupe is putting an investment of C$14m (US$9m) toward expanding its 3D animation and live-action production efforts.

The cash investment comes through SGF Tech, a Quebec government joint-venture capital fund. SGF joins existing partners Lions Gate Entertainment and Fox Family Worldwide (now owned by Disney) on the CineGroupe board.

With the new capital, CineGroupe plans to continue to integrate traditional and digital technologies including 3D animation and interactive digital products, and company execs say that the investment will also go a long way in stepping up collaboration between Lions Gate and CineGroupe.

The company's new live-action division, CineGroupe Images, starts shooting 21 new half-hours of Big Wolf on Campus III this month.

CineGroupe picked up the project last year when floundering Quebec production company Telescene was not able to finance the series. Seasons one and two currently air on YTV in Canada and Fox Family in the US.

CineGroupe is also gearing up to begin production on a slew of animated projects this fall including: Daft Planet, a 26×24' teen comedy, and The Three Pigs (26×22'), about a very hip country pig who moves to the big city.
