Cineflix picks up White Boy Rick doc

The story of Richard Wershe (left) is also the subject of a Hollywood movie

UK indie distributor Cineflix Rights has picked up the global rights to documentary White Boy, charting the story of infamous FBI informant Richard Wershe Jr.

White Boy (1×90’) tells the story of Wershe who allegedly ran a vicious underground cocaine operation in 1980s Detroit at the age of just 17. In reality, he had been pushed into working for the federal and police authorities to catch their primary target, mayor Coleman Young.

After they no longer had a use for him, Wershe was left to fend for himself and continued dealing in drugs until he was arrested and jailed for life, allegedly by a revenge-seeking Young. Thirty years later, he remains in prison.

The documentary uses interviews with journalists, police officers, FBI agents and hit men to discover the truth about the man who was subsequently dubbed ‘White Boy Rick,’ whose story is dramatised in a forthcoming Hollywood movie starring Matthew McConaughey.

The deal to acquire White Boy was brokered by Giuliana Benvenuto, acquisitions manager for North America at Cineflix Rights, and Nick Savva, director of content distribution for Transition Studios.
