China net adds Korean formats

A Chinese broadcaster has struck a deal with South Korean media group CJ E&M to adapt the latter’s entertainment formats locally.

The partnership between Shanghai Media Group (SMG)-owned Dragon TV and CJ E&M will kick off with Chinese versions of the formats Grandpas Over Flowers and its spin-off Sisters Over Flowers.

The …Over Flowers reality format sees four well-known elderly actors go on a backpacking trip overseas together.

TvN, the South Korean network operated by CJ E&M, has had ratings success with both series domestically, while the two shows have also proved popular in Japan and Taiwan, CH E&M said.

SMG and CJ E&M, which have previously collaborated on Chinese versions of Western musicals such as Mamma Mia! and Cats, will also develop new content together as part of the deal.

CJ E&M has previously produced the talent format Super Diva in China, in 2012, alongside variety series Superstar China and The Romantic.

This year CJ E&M is working on film projects such as The Fist (working title), Pyeongando (wt), and Love and Lingerie (wt) in China.

Last month broadcasters and producers in Europe and Latin America acquired format rights to competition shows and drama series from the South Korean media group.
