Channel 4 to tell Handmaid’s Tale in UK

Channel 4 in the UK has picked up Hulu original drama The Handmaid’s Tale from MGM Television.

Elisabeth Moss stars in The Handmaid’s Tale

The series, which stars Elisabeth Moss and Joseph Fiennes, will premiere on C4 this month.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s award-winning dystopian novel, the 10-part series follows life in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the US.

Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birth rate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state.

The story was adapted for television by showrunner Bruce Miller, with MGM Television producing and distributing worldwide.

Jay Hunt, C4’s chief creative officer, said: “The Handmaid’s Tale is a chilling and frighteningly topical exploration of a world where women are subjugated. I’m delighted that Channel 4 viewers will get to see this critically acclaimed take on a classic novel.”
